hey guys, had a flick through this and there are some very nice pieces of work.

Anyway after attempting one of my own i've become stuck. how is the hop unit meant to fit underneath the rear sights? if i sanded the sights edges down it would be still out of the side.

using a D-boys k98 and a JG bar 10 if that helps any

Thanks
Tom

if you read the whole thread you can see how people have done theres, mine took a hell of a lot of dremeling, filing, and wet n dry paper to shape to the outer barrel to fit :good: theres a few good pictures here to help you out as well :D

i understand what you meen now,we all cut the sights off the original dboys barrel ,file them to shape underneeth and either glue or screw them onto the top of the vsr barrel,we dont try to fit the vsr hop into the dboys barrel .i hope that helps.

righto, everything is almost all done. what/ where can i get a set of useable rear sights?
used the vsr for the back so the dboys bits are floating somewhere if you guys have simply chopped and recycled them

thanks guys, this thread has been a massive help

Thanks to the inspiration of this thread and my desire to actually attend a game this year, I started my K98 combining the Dboys rifle with a HFC VSR-11 TM clone from Airsoft World. They had the two-tone stock version on offer for £99 (RIF was £130) and it was superb quality and TM spares/upgrades compatible. I used the VSR in standard form for a whole game at my local site and it performed great, so I decided to go ahead with the conversion.

Some pics for starters-

Dboys before:

Collar for increasing the size of the receiver:

Cropped bolt for handle:

Made bushing with 90 degree slot for the bolt handle. Am going to drill and tap a hole for an M4 bolt through the Rifle bolt which will act as the stopper:

Barrel bush:

Upper wood furniture:

Started rear sight too:

Got some more pics to come and hopefully it'll go together soon.
Made one mistake on the lower frame with the original magwell/trigger housing and have had to make a small correction but hopefully won't ruin it for me!

Thanks mate, the under side of the sight was done by hand with a Die grinder and Spiralband sanding tool, then finished off a bit more by sanding it along the VSR barrel with some emery cloth wrapped round it :giggle:

Got some more done today.

Looks bad but needed doing to get VSR trigger unit to fit down far enough.

Here's the mess up, damaged the original end with the hole in so I moved it backwards slightly and also made magwell bit too big. I'll fill it in with some more wood.

Bolt release/ejector

Just needed more work done on the receiver before fitting it on.

Also started finishing rear sight.
Decided to rivet on the spring and then bond on the sight block to the barrel.

Also started addressing my gap problem on the barrel band

Going to add some filler and wrap some thin plywood round under it so its not as obvious!

Stripper clip hole

Nearly there!

Beautiful job! Just be careful when you secure the trigger guard...mine snapped with just a bit too much overtightening screws and the trigger-maghousing junction was thicker on mine than it is on yours.

Ah ok thanks bud.
Going to get bit more of the receiver finished today and hopefully painted. Its all feeling pretty sturdy though.

Started sanding down the stock last night to get the brown and the white sealer off. Takes ages but I'm doing it by hand to I don't damage the stock.

Can't decide if I want to stain and varnish the stock for low maintenance or go for the full works and oil it up.

Managed to get more done today. Will be the last for a while as I'll be back on shift on sunday.

finishing off the receiver. Holes are for solid rivets.

Bit of body fill under it helped to get it sat flat and once it was dry I took out the skin pins and put in solid rivets.

Naff pic but its black at least!

Tried to get markings flushed out a bit on the barrel. Filed it to give it a key and started using some high-build primer on it.

Nearly there

Hopefully do more next week. Would like to use it soon after all this effort spent on it!

Well I've left the scope mount ridge on the side of the rear sight just in case I find a nice period scope for it, but primarily I'm aiming for 350fps and use it with iron sights as I do love a clutter free Mauser :happyswing:
I got the piston with the weights on it for the real shock, and with the weights on it I got 290fps, and with them off I got 360fps. I might leave them on and try a spare spring I was given which apparently gives you 450 ish, so should then have the noise of the weighted piston but with more like 350fps.

It might be a load of rubbish and I'll go straight back to just using plain piston and 360fps :giggle:

I was wondering what people thought was a reasonable wood stain colour for the stock? The Tanaka K98s all seem quite light (almost a beech colour), but I've seen walnut recommended which is a fair bit darker. I know there was a lot of variety in the real thing.

I seem to have spent weeks sanding all the horrible waxy primer off my D-Boys K98 stock and I don't want to cock it up at the last stage!

Cheers

there was a lot of vaiation in colour but remember any original ones that you may use for reference will be quite age darkened and for a period looking gun then probably one shade lighter than you were going to, but wallnut is probably as dark as it should get, remember wood stain is a bit like paint in that many coats can be applied and it will darken with each coat.

My Dboys Kar98k .Fitted with a one piece barrel 490mm from a G36.
Woodwork(plastic) darkened with shoe cream from Aldi (brush on wipe with kitchen towl then polish)
Metal rubbed up with wire wool then rubbed with Humbrol polishable gun metal.

I must say that looks very good for a plastic stock..
One question though, with the stock being plastic, won't the shoe cream rub off easily??
